SEO Freelancer or Agency in Chennai — The Arithmetic, Both Ways

We are an agency, so read this knowing that. It is also the question we are asked most often, and the honest answer sends a fair number of enquiries away — which is the only reason a page like this is worth writing.

In short

A beginner Indian SEO freelancer charges ₹500–₹1,500 an hour and an experienced consultant ₹2,000–₹6,000. GoodFirms puts Chennai's 346 verified agencies at a median $25 an hour. At ₹2,000/hour, twenty hours equals ₹40,000 — the same as a top Chennai agency package. The difference is parallelism, not quality.

Prices collected from live pages, September 2026Tiers are a starting point, not a fixed quote. What you pay depends on how many pages you have, how competitive your terms are and how much needs repairing before anything can rank — the ₹12,500 audit establishes that before either of us commits to a retainer. The comparison everyone gets wrong

The usual framing is “freelancer cheap, agency expensive”, and the numbers do not support it. Twenty hours a month of an experienced consultant at ₹2,000 an hour is ₹40,000 — more than Nikitha's top published package and more than our Growth tier. Meanwhile 91 of GoodFirms' 346 listed Chennai agencies charge under $25 an hour, which is well inside freelance territory. The two markets overlap almost completely on price.

What actually differs is parallelism. One person can do technical SEO, or content, or link acquisition, or AI-citation tracking, to a high standard. Very few do three of those well at once, and nobody does four, because they are different jobs that happen to share a job title. If your site needs one of them, hiring the individual who is excellent at it is almost always the better buy. If it needs three running every month for a year, the coordination cost of three freelancers lands on you — and you are usually not equipped to judge whether the link person is doing something that will hurt you.

Which one, honestly

Hire a freelancer when

You have one clear problem — a migration, a technical fix list, a content programme, a schema implementation. Your site is small. You have a developer already. Your budget is under ₹15,000 a month. Or you want an audit implemented and you already know what needs doing. Buy hours deliberately rather than a vague retainer, and agree the deliverable in writing.

  • ₹500–₹6,000/hour depending on experience
  • Best value for a single discipline
  • You manage the work

Hire an agency when

You need technical, content, links and measurement running together every month. You have multiple locations or a large catalogue. You need someone accountable when a person is ill or leaves. Or you need reporting a board will accept. The honest threshold is roughly ₹15,000 a month — below it, an agency spreads too thin to do anything properly.

  • ₹8,500–₹60,000/month published in Chennai
  • Best for three or more disciplines at once
  • They manage the work

The hybrid nobody sells you

The arrangement that works best for a lot of Chennai SMEs is neither: buy a one-off diagnosis, then buy implementation hours against it. A ₹12,500 audit with a prioritised fix list, handed to a freelance developer or your own team, can cost less in total than four months of a thin retainer and produce more. It also leaves you with an asset — a documented understanding of your own site — that survives whoever you hire next.

We sell that deliberately, and it loses us retainers. The audit fee is credited against a retainer started within 30 days, so the incentive to convert exists, but a meaningful share of audit clients take the report and implement it themselves. That is a legitimate outcome and we would rather have it than a ₹15,000 retainer that neither side believes in.

Questions to ask either one

Ask a freelancer

  • How many clients do you have right now, and what happens in a busy month?
  • Which of the four disciplines is your strongest, and which do you not do?
  • Who covers the work if you are unwell for two weeks?
  • Show me a site you worked on with the dates you worked on it
  • Will you write down the deliverable for the month before I pay for it?

Ask an agency

  • Who specifically does my work, and how many other accounts do they carry?
  • What is itemised in the tier, and what is explicitly excluded?
  • What is the minimum term, and what happens in month four if nothing moves?
  • Do I own the accounts from day one?
  • Show me a case study with a date range and a starting position

Freelancer vs agency questions

Is a freelancer cheaper than an agency in Chennai?

Not necessarily. Twenty hours of an experienced consultant at ₹2,000 an hour is ₹40,000, more than most published Chennai agency packages. GoodFirms puts 91 of the city's 346 agencies under $25 an hour. The markets overlap heavily on price and differ on how many disciplines can run at once.

What can one person realistically do in a month?

One discipline, properly. Technical SEO, or content production, or link acquisition, or AI-citation tracking. Perhaps two if the site is small. The failure mode is a freelancer stretched across all four at ₹15,000 a month, which produces a report and very little else — and it is the same failure mode as a thin agency retainer.

How do I check a Chennai SEO freelancer is any good?

Ask for two sites they worked on with the dates, then look at what changed in that window. Ask which discipline they do not do — anyone who claims all four is either exceptional or exaggerating. And ask them to write the month's deliverable down before you pay, which is the same standard you should hold an agency to.

Can I use both?

Yes, and it is a good structure: an agency for strategy, measurement and the disciplines you cannot resource, a freelancer or in-house developer for implementation. It usually costs less than a full-service retainer. The requirement is that one of them owns the plan, otherwise the work fragments.

What is the minimum budget where an agency makes sense?

About ₹15,000 a month, which is where our own local tier starts and where Nikitha's and Oniv's entry tiers sit. Below that an agency must spread a few hours across your account, and the work becomes reporting rather than doing. The honest alternative below ₹15,000 is an audit plus deliberate freelance hours.

Do freelancers do AI-search optimisation?

Some do the content and schema parts well. What is harder for one person is the measurement — 30 prompts across 5 engines at 10 runs each is 1,500 answers a month, which is a process rather than a task. If a freelancer offers AEO, ask how they measure it and whether they will show you the losses as well as the wins.

Why is an agency telling me to consider a freelancer?

Because the enquiries we would win by pretending otherwise are the ones that fail at month four and cost us more than they earn. It is also the same reasoning behind publishing our prices next to competitors who are cheaper than us. If the honest answer sends you elsewhere, the page did its job.
